Kedarnath is one the most sacred pilgrimages for the religious Hindu. It is located in middle of beautiful mountains of the Garhwal Himalayas at the top of the River Mandakini. The temple can be visited from 28th April to November. It is one of the most important Hindu temples in Himalayas, and the leading Shiva temples in the country. It is regarded as one of the 12 Jyothirlingas and one of the Panch Kedars.

As per the legend, the idol at Kedarnath temple is the remains of a bull, a form taken by Lord Shiva, while avoiding the Pandavas, who were spending their time doing penance for killing their relatives in the war of Kurukshetra. As the Pandavas chased him to the area, he went underground, depositing a hump on the ground. It is this hump that is worshipped at this place.

It is said that the Kedarnath temple was built by the Pandavas. There is the idol of Nandi (the holy bull of Shiva) at the temple entrance. The wall within the temple has exotic carvings of images and there is a shiva lingam within the temple. This lingam is worshipped by the devotees. However this lingam is unusual as it is pyramidal.

When the winter comes during the month of November, the idol of Lord Shiva, is brought down from Garhwal (Kedarkhand) to Ukhimath, and is taken back to Kedarnath, during the 1st week of May. During this period, the devotees are allowed to enter the temple.

The temple of Kedarnath is situated in very scenic location and is encircled by high snow-coated hills and grassy fields in the valleys. Right at the back of the temple, there is the Keadardome peak, which is visible from afar. View of the temple along with the snow clad peaks is an enchanting scene.

Vasuki Tal: Located at a height of 14, 200 ft, and at a distance of 6 kms from Kedarnath, Vasuki Tal is based on the right side of the valley. The translucent lake with gorgeous scenic location, is a must visit for the nature lover.

Son Prayag

Situated at the merger of the Mandakini and the Sone-Ganga, this exotic village is one of the most beautiful.

Gaurikund

An antique temple devoted to the Goddess Gauri or Parvati, the Gaurikund is the home to the metallic statues of Gauri and Shiva. Legend goes that Parvati meditated here for long, to get Shiva as her spouse.
