Mallikarjuna Jyotirlinga Shiva Temple

The hill temple resembles a big fort and is famous for its treasure house of sculptures. There are lines of sculptures on the walls, resembling a gallery. Also there are a many bass relieves, that are a figurative representation of the different legends. A statue of sage Bringi positioned on 3 legs is remarkable.

Initial writings describe how monarchs of various dynasties such as the Satavahanas, Vakatakas, Kakatiyas and Vijayanagar were staunch devotees of Lord Mallikarjuna and augmented the temple by additional construction and other rewards. Subsequently, Maratha king Chatrapati Shivaji is said to have built a gopuram at the shrine.

THE SANCTUM

The sanctum housing Lord Mallikarjuna is a shell-like construction. The Mukhamandapa is a nicely carved pillared hall in Vijayanagar fashion. Nandi, Shiva’s base, is kept in another mandapa. There are smaller temples for Nataraja and Sahasra Linga. The Sahasra Linga is interesting in that the chief Linga is separated into 25 sides, each one again representing 40 Lingas, giving a total of 1,000 Lingas. A 3 hooded cobra is engraved as intertwined round the Linga. One more Linga of Mallikarjuna below a Vata vriksha (banyan tree) is believed to be the actual Linga.

A short distance away from these temples, lies the sanctum of Goddess Bhramarambika, the companion of Mallikarjuna. The Goddess is considered to have taken a form of a bee and worshipped Shiva at this spot.

THEERTHAM

The Krishna river, flowing just 4 km away from the temple, is the holy Theertham called as PaathaalaGanga. Devotees bather here and lug holy water uphill to do abhisheka for the Lord.

A temple devoted to Lord Umamaheshwara lies on way to the Theertham
